The Fairy Duster plant (genus Calliandra) is a charming desert shrub native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It’s especially well known for its delicate, feathery blooms that resemble tiny powder puffs—hence the whimsical name!
The blooms range from pink to red and are quite beautiful. It's blooming right now in April here in Tucson.
The necklace I made is inspired by this Fairy Duster plant. The "chain" is made up of articulated sterling silver disks riveted together. These undulating disks provide great movement in the piece. One disk is 18K gold for contrast to the heavily patinaed silver.. The "fairy duster" center is composed of tiny Japanese seed beads riveted into an etched sterling silver disk. The piece measures 18 inches.
