When I sit down at the torch I usually have an idea what I am going to create. But sometimes the glass takes over and I just go with the flow. (pun intended)
So I have a collection of one of a kind beads or cabochons. Some times I just sit and stare at the glass and then sit and stare at all of the stones I purchased over the years trying to decide what jewelry to make. And it came to me one day to make some pieces with glass and stones that complimented each other. The piece I am showing here is one of a series of 12 that I kept for myself.
Designing is complicated. My method is to place the stones and glass on my bench and move them around until the design pleases me.
This pendant showcases a harmonious blend of design elements:
1. Color – The handcrafted glass cabochon introduces a dynamic interplay of earthy browns and vibrant turquoise, creating a visually striking contrast. The warm red-orange hues of the agate complement the tones in the glass, while the white sapphire adds a bright, neutral accent.
2. Shape & Form – The elongated oval of the glass cabochon is balanced by the rounded rectangle of the agate, creating a pleasing asymmetry. The small round white sapphire at the bottom adds a finishing touch that draws the eye downward, completing the piece.
3. Texture & Surface – The glass cabochon has a glossy, smooth finish, accentuating its fluid patterns. The polished agate adds warmth and depth, while the faceted white sapphire introduces a touch of brilliance and sparkle.
4. Contrast & Balance – The pendant combines different materials and finishes—transparent and opaque, smooth and faceted. The placement of the elements maintains a sense of balance despite the variation in textures.
5. Line & Movement – The vertical connection between the components creates a sense of fluidity, guiding the eye from the top glass piece down through the agate to the white sapphire. The subtle silver framing enhances the organic flow of the design. Within the. glass and the stone there are also "lines".
This pendant is an excellent example of how different elements of design—color, shape, texture, contrast, and movement—can be combined to create a unique and aesthetically pleasing composition. And it is enhanced by the organic hand crafted chain.
